The Yankees have expanded their coaching staff once again.
According to SNY MLB Insider Andy Martino, Brad Ausmus will be Aaron Boone’s next bench coach in New York, taking Carlos Mendoza’s place as the new Mets manager.
Ausmus has connections to the group and travels to the Bronx.
The Yankees selected the former big leaguer in the 48th round of the 1987 MLB Draft. Before being chosen by the Rockies in the expansion draft, he spent his first five seasons in the organization and was never able to make it to the majors.
Over the course of his 18-year MLB career, Ausmus played for the Padres, Astros, Tigers, and Dodgers. As a three-time Gold Glove winner and one-time All-Star behind the plate, he retired in 2010.
He started his off-field career quickly since a year later he was back with the Padres as an executive. Before the 2014 season, Ausmus had that role until he was announced as the Tigers manager.
Before joining the Angels as a special assistant to former Mets general manager Billy Eppler, he spent three seasons in Detroit, where he won one AL Central championship. He would take over as the team’s manager in the middle of the season, but his tenure would only be one year.
He served as the Athletics’ bench coach last season after taking a two-year hiatus, and he is now a member of Boone’s staff with the Yankees as they attempt to make a postseason comeback following a disappointing year.
