The Dodgers have what it takes to sign Ohtani, but that might not be the deciding factor in his decision. The Athletic’s Zack Meisel and Andy McCullough report that executives think Ohtani is more concerned about finding a good match than with increasing his salary:
“From what I’ve gathered, he isn’t motivated by financial gain,” remarked another executive from NL. First of all, he rejected a substantial amount of money [in Japan] to come here. Where he thinks it will work best is all that matters.
In 2017, Ohtani decided to leave Nippon Professional Baseball and join Major League Baseball instead of signing a lucrative deal with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters.
Despite being restricted to a rookie scale contract due to international signing regulations, Ohtani received a small $2.315 million signing bonus and eventually joined the Los Angeles Angels.
This past season, the 29-year-old set a new record for arbitration-eligible players with a $30 million contract in his final year of team control.
Ohtani has made a lot more money from endorsements, advertising, and marketing than he did from his base pay. Forbes said that Ohtani’s 2022 earnings were $20 million, and Axios reported that Ohtani’s 2023 earnings were $40 million—far more than the next closest Major League Baseball player, Bryce Harper, who earned $7 million.

No reports have surfaced thus far in the summer indicating that Ohtani has visited any particular organizations. His alleged request that clubs keep his free agency discussions under wraps is the key reason why his plans are mostly unknown.
