In the US, Saturday was dominated by college football drama and garnered a lot of attention, but baseball was also being played in the Dominican Republic. This week’s new addition to the Gigantes del Cibao is Noelvi Marte. Tuesday was his debut game, and he had a 3-4 night with a double, run, and RBI. He extended his hitting streak to four games on Saturday night. Before he singled up the middle of the eighth inning, he was hitless. This brought his average up to.412. He did, however, steal second base on the following play and, after sliding headfirst, he asked for the trainer.
Up until he stayed on the dirt at second base following the slide, nothing about the play appeared abnormal. The trainer emerged, seemingly examining his hamstring. After assisting him for a minute or so, Marte hobbled off the field with some help from the training staff members standing on either side of him. Then Marte went down the dugout steps by himself.
There was no update right away after the game because it was played in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Winter League regular season ends in less than a month, and then the playoffs start. Even if Marte gets well before then, it’s unclear if he will make a comeback. Unless an injury keeps a position player off the field, big league clubs often don’t intervene to stop them from playing in winter leagues. Given Marte’s early departure from the game on Saturday night, they might have to intervene. We’ll have to watch over the next few days to see what transpires in this situation.
