There might be a cordial competition developing in the NL Central for one previous Cy Young Award winner’s services.
The Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds are two teams who are actively pursuing trade talks for Cleveland Guardians right-hander Shane Bieber, according to a report from Jon Morosi of MLB Network on Tuesday. According to Morosi, Tyler Glasnow, a righty for the Tampa Bay Rays, is also being considered by both teams.
An intriguing name is Bieber, who won the AL Cy Young Award during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Even though he is still only 28, in 2024 he will enter his last year as club president. With a 3.80 ERA and 107 strikeouts in his previous season, Bieber was 6-6 for Cleveland but missed a significant amount of time due to an elbow injury in the middle of the season.
In addition to needing another seasoned element to help them get over the wall, the Cubs and Reds also have extremely robust farm systems to lure the Guardians. (The Reds finished 82-80 last season, and the Cubs finished 83-79.) Bieber, a two-time All-Star and 2022 Gold Glove winner, was previously a trade target a few months ago and now seems to be attracting significant interest once more.
