Contract talks with Ohtani reach final stretch

The future of Shohei Ohtani’s MLB career is uncertain, but Giants fans are among those who will be watching with bated breath.

According to Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith, who cited industry sources with knowledge of the contract negotiations, a handful of Major League Baseball clubs are expected to meet with Shohei Ohtani and his representatives this coming weekend in Los Angeles. The contract negotiations with the Japanese two-way star are currently in their final stages.

Despite widespread speculation that the 49ers were among the clubs that approached Ohtani about a possible free agent signing, San Francisco’s exact position in the free agent lottery remаins unknown.

As of Friday, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan (citing sources), the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, Toronto Blue Jays, and the Los Angeles Angels (with whom Ohtani spent the past six seasons) were still in the bidding for Ohtani. The New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, and Texas Rangers have all moved on to other players on the market.

“The San Francisco Giants have long had a fondness for Ohtani, though where they stand in these sweepstakes is unknown,” said Passan.

As the rumored negotiations come to a close, that could turn out to be useful. After Passan said last month that Ohtani would hold any company responsible if information about their discussions with clubs were to be leaked, the Giants may be staying low to honor Ohtani’s desire for privacy.

However, during an interview on “Hоt Stove” earlier this week, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi made it plain that San Francisco hasn’t kept their desire to sign Ohtani as hidden.

“Sources tell me the Giants are set, they are devoting their whole heart and finances to landing one of Shohei Ohtani or Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the coming weeks,” stated Morosi.

It is still unclear if the Giants will bring Ohtani or Yamamoto, a Japanese pitcher they have targeted, to San Francisco. However, in the days to come, Giants supporters may get their response.
