‘I expect the Celtics to be active in the trade market’: Shams Charania after Boston’s IST loss

You are by no means alone if you felt that the Boston Celtics could have a few players who the team could rely on for similar production after watching the Indiana Pacers’ bench players cause almost as much trouble as did their starters in Monday night’s in-season tournament quarterfinals loss.

In fact, Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium offered commentary on Boston’s bench after the game, raising the possibility that the team intends to strengthen its reserve corps by making a few strategic moves at the 2024 NBA trade deadline during an appearance on Fan Duel’s “Run it Back” podcast.

The Celtics were outscored 17 to 7 in the closing minute and a half of last night’s game, which is concerning given what we’ve seen over the past few years, according to a reporter for The Athletic.”I think that’s still a problem for this team, but Jayson Tatum (and) Jaylen Brown have been incredible over the (last few) seasons and during playoff runs,” Charania continued.

“I just think that from a staff standpoint, making timely baskets, the Celtics were obviously a little bit lacking last night. They had 21 points off the bench, with Luke Kornet and Sam Hauser scoring a little bit each, but the Pacers, on the other hand, had 33 points off their bench and several players scoring in double figures after that.”

said, “The Celtics gave up that Jrue Holiday trade and a couple first round picks.” “They still have some picks from the first round left over.”As February approaches, Charania said, “I anticipate the Celtics to be active in the trade market to try to see if they can beef up their bench rotation and (their) players coming off that bench and see what they can do in the trade market.”

It’s unclear exactly which players, or even what kind of players, Boston may be interested in. However, it appears that a strong frontcourt player who can contribute significantly when called upon is probably at the top of the list.

Recent rumors about Memphis Grizzlies wing John Konchar have intimated that the Celtics may also be searching at more dependable wing depth under team control at a reasonable cost for several seasons.
