The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Indiana Pacers 123-109 on Saturday night in Las Vegas to win the NBA’s first-ever In-Season Tournament. LeBron James and Anthony Davis combined for 65 points.
The Lakers cashed in on their chips, taking home the first-ever NBA Cup trophy, a half-million dollar award per player, and the title of being the first-ever in-season tournament winner in history in a game that was not even factored into the rankings.
Both teams went into the NBA In-Season Tournament Final with a perfect record of 6-0, hence the clаsh featured an unstoppable force colliding with an immovable object.
With a perfect 7-0 record, the Lakers won the In-Season Tournament handily. They swept the Phoenix Suns, Kevin Durant, and Devin Booker in the quarterfinals; they demolished the New Orleans Pelicans in the semifinals; and in the Final, they comfortably defeated Tyrese Haliburton and the troublesome Pacers.
The Pacers, who surprised everyone by defeating the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks en route to the championship game, were unable to overcome the Lakers.
For the purple and gold, Davis was unstoppable, tallying 41 points to go along with 20 rebounds, six assists, and four blocks. James finished the game with 24 points and 11 rebounds while staying out of foul trouble the entire time.
Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton led Indiana with 20 points and 11 assists in the opening quarter of the season, coming off his first All-Star participation earlier this year and an incredible start.
After the first quarter, Los Angeles led 34-29, but the Pacers were able to stay close because LeBron James was fouling out. The Lakers were ahead 65–60 at the half after failing to build on their lead.
Austin Reaves, who battled flu-like symptoms and scored a career-high 22 points off the bench in the first half, replaced James, who had just 12 points and three fouls at the half.
With 1:34 left in the third quarter, the Pacers had narrowed the advantage to just five points. However, James came off the bench and the Lakers went on a rapid 6-0 run, which was capped off by an alley-oop pass to Davis that put them up by eleven points again.
Ultimately, though, the Lakers just desired it more.
The dynamic pair of James and Davis seized over in the final minutes as Los Angeles tightened up their defense.
Paint was dominated by the Lakers. outscoring the Pacers in the paint, 86–44.
