With the trade deadline of February 8 looming, a source claims that the Los Angeles Lakers are actively seeking to move point guard D’Angelo Russell.
Sam Amico reported, “Russell is having a nice season, but the Lakers are actively looking to move him, according to sources told Hoops Wire.”
There was talk last month that Rui Hachimura and Russell could be traded by the Lakers this season, according to rival NBA executives.
The floor general’s 2023–24 regular season is getting off to a very strong start. He is shooting 48.3 percent from the field and 40.5 percent from outside the 3-point line, averaging 16.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game.
In the teаm’s Dec. 9 In-Seаsоn Tоurnаment victоry оver the Indiаnа Pаcers, Russell hаd а strоng perfоrmаnce. The 27-yeаr-оld shоt 6-оf-15 frоm the flооr аnd finished with 13 pоints, fоur rebоunds, seven аssists, оne blоck, аnd оne steаl in 32 minutes оf аctiоn.
In the end, Russell and the Lakers defeated the Pacers 123-109 to claim the first-ever In-Season Tournament championship.
The point guard is currently serving his second term with the legendary Lakers team. Russell was selected by Los Angeles with the No. 2 overall choice in the 2015 NBA Draft, before being acquired by the franchise again through trade for the 2022–2023 regular season.
He played his first two seasons with the Lakers before being traded, along with Timofey Mozgov, for Brook Lopez and Kyle Kuzma, the No. 27 selection in the 2017 NBA Draft, to the Brooklyn Nets in the summer of 2017.
Following their Tuesday matchup with the formidable Dallas Mavericks, the Lakers will take on Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs on December 13 and December 15. With a dismal 3-19 record that is the poorest in the Western Conference and 17 straight losses, the Spurs are perhaps the weakest NBA team this year.
To put the length of time that has passed since the Spurs have won, consider that they haven’t defeated the Phoenix Suns since November 2, which was more than a month ago.
