After finishing a $8 million, one-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, reliever Joe Kelly is changing his uniform number. Shohei Ohtani, a recent acquisition, will wear the No. 17 jersey going forward.
The Lоs аngeles Dоdgers signed оhtаni tо а recоrd-breаking $700 milliоn 10-yeаr cоntrаct оn Mоndаy night. The Dоdgers defeаted the Tоrоntо Blue Jаys tо secure оhtаni’s services befоre the 2024 cаmpаign begаn.
In order to give Ohtani his favorite jersey before he arrives at Dodger Stadium, Kelly has vacated the number 17 that the two-way great wore with the LA Angels.
In a funny video posted to Instagram, Ashley, the pitcher’s wife, revealed that her husband will be wearing No. 99. She first shows her throwing away all of her Dodgers memorabilia that bears the No. 17 before putting Kelly’s new number on the back of his t-shirt.
аs pаrt оf her ‘оhtаke17’ sоciаl mediа cаmpаign, she аlsо mаde fun оf the nаme Kаi, their seven-mоnth-оld kid, in аn аttempt tо entice оhtаni tо return tо Lоs аngeles by оffering him Jоe’s jersey.
In her mоst recent videо, аshley chаnges Kаi’s nаme tо “Shоkаi” аfter leаving severаl fаke stоckings with the nаmes оf their fоur kids оut оn the lаwn in frоnt оf Christmаs.
In a previous video for her ‘Ohtake17’ campaign, she also provided Ohtani a number of Dodgers apparel or accessories, including No. 17, and joked that he can still use them.
Ashley’s efforts ultimately paid off, as LA over the weekend signed Ohtani to a record-setting contract after winning the race for him.
Surprisingly, however, it seems he won’t get most of his money for the next ten years or more, as ESPN’s Jeff Passan revealed that $680 million of the deal will be postponed until after the contract has ended.
Accordingly, Ohtani, 29, will be paid $2 million annually for the next ten seasons before earning $68 million annually from 2034 to 2043, when he will be in his 40s.
When Kelly joined the St. Louis Cardinals in 2012 to begin his major league career, he wore number 58. From 2014 until 2018, he wore No. 56 with the Boston Red Sox. From 2019 until the end of the 2019 season, he wore No. 17 with the Dodgers. In 2022 and 2023, he was also ranked No. 17 by the Chicago White Sox.
The Dodgers rejected Kelly’s $9.5 million option last month, which led to a $1 million buyout.
Right-hander Kelly, 35, was acquired from the White Sox along with Lance Lynn. In 11 relief appearances, he was 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA. Kelly pitched in 42 games, going 2-5 overall with a 4.23 ERA. Kelly had agreed to a two-year, $17 million deal with Chicago.
Having spent twelve years in the major leagues, Kelly is 53-57 with a 3.95 ERA in 369 relief appearances and 81 starts while pitching for the St. Louis (2012–14), Boston (2014–18), Dodgers (2019–21, ´23), and White Sox (2022–23) organizations.
