Blake Dunn is the solution to the Reds’ search for a right-handed hitting outfielder. The Cincinnati Reds outfield is suddenly as crowded as the infield.
If Cincinnati Reds fans are given the impression that Spencer Steer will primarily occupy the left field position, with TJ Friedl securing everyday starts in center field, it leaves Will Benson and Jake Fraley as potential starters in right field when facing right-handed pitchers.
Nevertheless, the situation becomes slightly more challenging when the time comes to face left-handed pitchers. Both Benson and Fraley struggled against lefties during the 2023 season. However, instead of pursuing external options such as Michael A. Taylor or Randal Grichuk, it’s possible that the Reds already possess an internal solution within their organization.
Who could join the Reds Opening Day roster as the fifth outfielder?
Alongside the quartet mentioned earlier—Spencer Steer, Will Benson, Jake Fraley, and TJ Friedl—the Cincinnati Reds boast an additional six outfielders on their 40-man roster.
Nick Martini, Rece Hinds, TJ Hopkins, Jacob Hurtubise, Stuart Fairchild, and Bubba Thompson all occupy spots on the current roster. While Hinds, Hurtubise, and Fairchild are expected to remain with the Reds throughout spring training, the situations of the other three players are rather uncertain.
Currently, Stuart Fairchild appears to be the frontrunner for the fifth and final outfield position on the Reds’ roster. The 27-year-old enjoyed a 97-game stint in the majors last season, where he showcased a combination of power and speed, while also delivering above-average defensive performances across all three outfield positions.
Will Blake Dunn push Stuart Fairchild off the Reds roster?
There is, however, a highly skilled player, currently not listed on the Cincinnati Reds’ 40-man roster, who possesses the potential to secure a spot on the team’s Opening Day roster next spring.
Blake Dunn made a significant impact in 2023, emerging onto the scene with his exceptional abilities. After battling injuries, the Western Michigan alum showcased his talent and became one of the Reds’ most impressive minor league performers last year. Dunn boasted an impressive batting average of .312, along with an on-base percentage of .425 and a slugging percentage of .522, achieved through his combined efforts in High-A and Double-A leagues. Additionally, he displayed his power by crushing 23 home runs and exhibiting his speed by stealing an impressive 53 bases.
Given that Dunn is 25 years old, there is a strong possibility that he could bypass Triple-A altogether if he delivers an outstanding performance in the Cactus League next spring. At the very least, Dunn could serve as a viable alternative if Stuart Fairchild fails to find success in 2024.
Although Stuart Fairchild currently holds an advantage due to his lack of minor league options, should he encounter difficulties, Blake Dunn will be waiting in the wings, ready to seize his spot on the roster.
Rather than allocating resources towards acquiring a platoon outfielder, it would be more prudent for president of baseball operations, Nick Krall, to invest that capital in enhancing the team’s pitching staff.
