Davis continued a run of dominant basketball, leading the Lakers to a 122-119 win on the second night of a back-to-back with LeBron James out, nursing his sᴏʀᴇ calf.
Anthony Davis is aware of the pressure to perform well for a team after they have invested a first-round choice in him.
Additionally, he is aware that the Spurs had a 17-game losing streak going into Wednesday, with youngster Victor Wembanyama’s arrival producing sporadic highlights mixed in with usual rookie problems.
He was there previously. He ensured on Wednesday that the top pick of this year wouldn’t get away.
With LeBron James sidelined due to a ѕσяє calf, Davis extended his streak of dominating basketball by leading the Lakers to a 122-119 victory on the second night of a back-to-back.
Wembanyama battled back, making back-to-back threes in the final seconds of the game to give the Lakers a tiny lead. However, he split on two of those shots, missing a chance to tie the game.
With 10 rebounds, four steals, and 37 points, Davis concluded the game. Wembanyama had 13 rebounds, 6 blocks, and 30 points.
When Davis targeted Wembanyama early on, the Spurs defense was stretched out to the perimeter, and for the first time since last March, Davis made multiple three-pointers.
With 24 points, including a forceful one-handed dunk over the rookie French player, Davis set the tone for the first half.
As they occasionally do, the Spurs made Davis their focal point in the second half, which prevented the Lakers from involving Davis as much and let everyone else to get going.
However, the Spurs refused to give up, and the Lakers needed Davis in the fourth quarter. Their only healthy player forced two crucial fouls on Wembanyama and made a mid-range jump shot that seemed to put a stop to the rally.
With two minutes remaining, the Lakers were ahead by ten points; however, with 17.3 seconds remaining, Davis had to make two free throws to extend their advantage to three, giving the Spurs one final opportunity. Wembanyama got a clear shot, but he missed wide, extending the NBA’s second-longest losing run to eighteen games. As expected, Davis seized the opportunity, scoring 11 points in the fourth quarter to keep San Antonio at bay. Even one last Hail Mary pass was intercepted by Davis.
Despite playing a significant amount of minutes without their top perimeter defenders, Cam Reddish and Jarred Vanderbilt, the Lakers managed to survive despite giving up 45 points in the fourth quarter.
On Friday, the two teams play again in San Antonio.
