‘Mason Greenwood hurt us a lot’, admits Antoine Griezmann after Atletico Madrid squander a two-goal lead against Getafe

In a dramatic turn of events in La Liga, Antoine Griezmann acknowledged the impact of Mason Greenwood, who played a pivotal role for Getafe in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone’s squad appeared poised for victory after securing a 3-1 lead, with Griezmann scoring twice and leveling with Luis Aragones as Atletico’s all-time leading scorer.

Despite facing adversity, losing Stefan Savic to a red card in the first half, the hosts maintained control. However, Getafe mounted a late comeback, denying Atletico all three points at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Speaking to DAZN, Griezmann lamented, “It’s a shame because we had made a great effort with ten. It’s a shame that Savic makes two fouls and gets two yellow cards. In the end, you hold on… Greenwood hurt us a lot; we couldn’t stop him at the end of the game, and two goals came.”

Greenwood’s stellar performance adds to his recent impressive showing against Sevilla, where the Manchester United loanee contributed a goal and an assist in Getafe’s 3-0 victory. Despite Getafe expressing their desire for Greenwood to stay permanently, Manchester United is expected to make a decision on his future later in the spring.

Having started in 11 of Getafe’s 18 La Liga games this season, Greenwood aims to solidify his place in Jose Bordalas’s squad, seeking to rejuvenate his career. Even if he doesn’t continue with Getafe, Greenwood’s future in La Liga remains uncertain, with Barcelona, Real Sociedad, and Valencia reportedly expressing interest in the talented forward. The coming weeks will undoubtedly play a crucial role in determining Greenwood’s next chapter in Spanish football.
