Former Cincinnati Reds backstop Mark Kolozsvary has a new home after spending the 2023 with the Baltimore Orioles.

Cincinnati Reds catcher Mark Kolozsvary

In the past, Mark Kolozsvary was regarded highly in the Cincinnati Reds farm system. The Reds selected Kolozsvary in the seventh round of the 2017 draft, and he was praised for his defensive play behind the dish.
In 2022, the former Florida Gator reached the major leagues. That season, the Reds saw Cincinnati’s catchers totally destroyed by injuries, so they decided to give Kolozsvary an opportunity to prove himself.
As a rookie in 2022, Kolozsvary was able to play in 10 games but only managed to get two hits and hit.200/.238/.400. But one of those crossed the fence. Midway through July, Kolozsvary made his debut off of Junior Fernandez, hitting his first round tripper over the left field wall in a start against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Mark Kolozsvary has inked a minor-league contract with the Boston Red Sox, and he will be moving to Florida in the spring. As part of the signing, Kolozsvary was invited to Red Sox spring training, as reported by ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel.

In 2023, Kolozsvary was able to participate in just one game. The Baltimore Orioles used the backstop in one game as a defensive substitute. Kolozsvary played with the Orioles for a portion of the previous season before being selected by the Minnesota Twins.

It will be difficult for Mark Kolozsvary to make the Red Sox Opening Day roster the following season. Catchers Reese McGuire and Connor Wong are the only two players on Boston’s 40-man roster right now. For the time being, Kolozsvary will be the only person behind the plate who is not on the roster. There are three catchers on the Cincinnati Reds’ 40-man roster. Most of Tyler Stephenson’s starts are anticipated, with Luke Maile providing backup for the former 2024 first-round selection. Just last week, Austin Wynns was added to a split-contract to provide Cincinnati’s minor league team more depth.
