The New Orleans Pelicans defeated the fatigued Los Angeles Lakers 129-109 on Sunday night, with 26 points apiece from Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram.

Both teams had two days off after their respective losses; Los Angeles had lost 108-106 at Minnesota on Saturday, while New Orleans had beaten Utah at home on Thursday.

The Lakers dropped their sixth game in a row despite a 34-point performance from LeBron James and 20 points and 10 rebounds from ex-Pelican Anthony Davis.

It had been seven days since the Lakers’ 133-89 In-Season Tournament semifinal victory over the Pelicans in Las Vegas on December 7. In front of a boisterous and packed New Year’s Eve audience, the Pelicans appeared to be a team looking for atonement.

New Orleans’ “Big Three” (Williamson, Ingram, and McCollum) have already scored 20 or more points in a single game four times this season. In these kind of games, the Pelicans have a perfect record of 4-0.

The Lakers were missing big Cam Reddish (adductor) and point guard D’Angelo Russell (back) for the game, while the Pelicans were missing Trey Murphy III (left knee), one of their best shooters. Everything was routine.

After suffering a left calf strain, Lakers forward Rui Hachimura exited the game during the first half.

With the exception of Davis, who scored 13 points in the first half, James scored all 21 of his points in the first half.

With a score of 74-57 at halftime, the Pelicans cruised to a first-half victory thanks to a 10-for-17 shooting performance from outside the arc by Ingram, who set up a rapid break that culminated in a basket by Nance.
