Sergio Reguilon returning to Tottenham as Manchester United as Luke Shaw and Malacia return to first training session in 2024

Man United bids farewell to another player as Sergio Reguilon returns to Tottenham earlier than expected, according to reports from the Daily Express. The left-back joined Manchester United on loan during the summer transfer window but failed to make a significant impact during his time at Old Trafford. Despite having a loan agreement until the end of the season, Reguilon will be sent back to his parent club.

The decision to return Reguilon to Tottenham was influenced by Luke Shaw’s return to the squad and Tyrell Malacia’s imminent full recovery. With these options available, Manchester United deemed Reguilon surplus to their requirements and saw no need to continue paying for his services for the remainder of the season.

During his stint at Manchester United, Reguilon made 12 appearances, including nine in the Premier League. However, the former Real Madrid player failed to contribute any goals or assists. Reguilon was utilized due to injuries within the squad, but even when coach Erik Ten Hag deployed him as a left-back, there was a lack of trust in the player.

The elimination of Ten Hag’s team from the Champions League and League Cup, coupled with slim chances of competing for the Premier League title, played a role in Manchester United’s decision to send Reguilon back to Tottenham. Their aspirations now lie in securing a top-four finish in the league, with only the FA Cup offering a realistic chance of winning a trophy.

It is worth noting that Sergio Reguilon was not Manchester United’s initial target. Initially, Ten Hag had sought to acquire Marc Cucurella, but complications arose after the defender joined Chelsea and became ineligible for League Cup matches. This forced Manchester United to shift their focus to Reguilon.
