Tempers ran high among Chelsea fans following a disappointing loss against Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg at the Riverside Stadium. As the players faced the wrath of the supporters, young star Cole Palmer swiftly made his way down the tunnel while Thiago Silva engaged in a conversation with frustrated fans.
The match ended with a surprise victory for Middlesbrough, courtesy of Hayden Hackney’s solitary goal. Chelsea’s lackluster performance, particularly in the attacking department, left much to be desired.
Cole Palmer, in particular, had two golden opportunities to put Chelsea on the scoresheet but failed to convert. One chance arose from a misplaced backpass by a Middlesbrough player, but Palmer’s shot went wide. Another opportunity came when the opposition goalkeeper spilled the ball in front of Palmer, who disappointingly sent his effort soaring over the bar from close range.
At the end of the match, Palmer swiftly made his way to the tunnel, while a section of Chelsea fans expressed their dissatisfaction with the team’s performance. Thiago Silva, along with Armando Broja, Conor Gallagher, and Levi Colwill, engaged in a conversation with some of the disgruntled fans, seemingly attempting to calm the situation.
Mauricio Pochettino, the Chelsea manager, later admitted that he did not witness the incident firsthand but acknowledged the frustrations of the fans.
