Manchester United is gearing up for early talks this year to secure the signing of teenage sensation Joao Neves from Benfica during the summer transfer window.
The 19-year-old holding midfielder has become a regular presence for the Portuguese champions under coach Roger Schmidt, making 27 appearances in all competitions. Neves also earned his senior debut for Portugal this season, featuring in three caps during Euro 2024 qualifying.
With a £103 million buy-out clause (€120 million), Neves is considered one of Europe’s most promising young talents. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the 71-year-old British billionaire who completed a £1.3 billion 25% takeover of Manchester United on Christmas Eve, is keen on enhancing the club’s recruitment efforts this year.
Having made nine Champions League appearances, Neves is seen as a priority investment for United amid a challenging season for the club. Renowned for his ability to break up play and initiate attacks from deep, the 47-game veteran for Benfica aligns with Ratcliffe’s plan to bolster the squad.
However, Benfica’s head coach, Schmidt, has ruled out the possibility of Neves leaving in the January transfer window, emphasizing the club’s commitment to retaining key players mid-season. Schmidt stated recently, “We are halfway through the season and we have big goals. We certainly won’t let any of these players leave. We need them and no one wants to leave, so there’s no question.”
With Neves under contract until 2028, Manchester United is prepared to exercise patience but is ready to lay the groundwork for the potential transfer.
