James and Russell slay the Trail Blazers in the fourth quarter, leading the Lakers to a 134-110 victory

The Los Angeles Lakers returned to.500 with a 134-110 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night, thanks to 34 points from D’Angelo Russell and 28 from LeBron James.

The Lakers (22-22) bounced back from an 18-point loss to Brooklyn two nights ago with a performance from Austin Reaves and Anthony Davis. Reaves scored 15 points, while Davis added 14 boards.

James and Russell scored 19 points apiece to start the fourth quarter for the Lakers.

On one of the 35 fastbreak points scored by the Lakers this season, Russell let his hair down. While James ran alongside, he faked a behind-the-back pass and finished the layin with the ball in his hands.

“That was sick,” James remarked while later shaking his head. “The only way to get fastbreak points is to defend, defend without fouling, and we did that.”

As he and Russell extended their lead to 23 points, James dunked, nailed a 3-pointer, and split the pair of free throws. Five games ago, Russell was back in the starting lineup, and he was eager to be аggressive like James and Davis.

“He’s been аggressive looking for his shot and we continue to try to find him, especially in transition,” added James.

James joined Davis and the other starters on the bench for the final six minutes of the game as they sat out the thrashing.

Portland was led by Malcolm Brogdon’s 23 points and 9 assists. Jerami Grant scored 17 points and Anfernee Simons contributed 19 as the West’s second-to-last squad lost their second straight game.

“The Trail Blazers have a certain record but at the end of the day they’ve still got a lot of firepower over there,” commentated Lakers coach Darvin Ham.

In the third quarter, when the Lakers’ lead grew to 22 points, Russell scored 13 points on three 3-pointers. In the fourth, he tied his season-high with six 3-pointers, making two more.

With eight assists, Russell came up just short of matching his career best of 35 points.

“He’s really locked in on his game and focused on ways he can help the team,” said Ham. “Tonight was one of the most complete games I’ve seen him play since he’s been back in a Laker uniform.”
