Junior Holiday, a guard for the Boston Celtics, has a player option that he can choose to use for the upcoming season.
The Celtics would love him to stay for more than just one season, though, as Brian Robb of MassLive reports. Holiday expressed his desire to negotiate a contract extension with the Celtics before the end of the season in an interview with MassLive.
“The last time I extended it was earlier this year,” Holiday explained. “I believe that we can accomplish both: discuss it and get ready for games and the future and all that.”
Holiday, who the Celtics traded for in October, has expressed his desire to remain in Boston for the foreseeable future and has stated that he is settling in well.
Holiday expressed his want to be present. “Loving the city, loving the organization, and loving the guys is making me feel more at ease.”
The $39.4 million player option that Holiday has, according to Robb, is likely to be turned down. Robb added that Boston may benefit from a deal with a lower starting pay but more total years if they could reach an agreement.
Jaylen Brown’s supermax extension is about to go into effect, and another one is probably on the way for Jayson Tatum, so according to Robb, the Celtics would have to pay over $100 million in luxury tax penalties just to keep their core together.
But with Brown, Tatum, Kristaps Porzingis, Derrick White, and Al Horford all under contract until next season, Holiday may find a return to the team enticing.
The fact that they are set for an extended period of time is something that everyone is aware of, according to Holiday. You can very much count on returning with the same crew every time, regardless of the outcome. Things happen, but I believe the key is to find a place of peace and release the pressure of constantly worrying about what’s next.
