Honest Analysis of Malcolm Brogdon’s One Season with the Celtics by Brogdon

This story first published on NBC Sports Boston and featured Malcolm Brogdon’s candid assessment of his one season with the Celtics.

According to the stats, Malcolm Brogdon and the Boston Celtics had a successful 2022–23 season. As a game-changing substitute for a championship-caliber team, he scored 14.9 points and 3.7 assists per game, set a new career high in 3-point shooting at 44.4 percent, and was named the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year.

Unfortunately, Brogdon’s tenure with the Celtics came to a disappointing end, and he appears to not hold a very positive memory of his time in Boston.

In a recent interview with Jack Quick of The Athletic, who was covering the deal between the Celtics and the Trail Blazers that took place in October, Brogdon expressed his excitement at being traded from a team where he wasn’t regarded to one where he is highly valued.

I take it you meаn Brogdon didn’t feel appreciated by the Celtics? “At times.” Occasionally, Brogdon informed Quick. I earned Sixth Man of the Year after a year there, and then they let me go. After all, it’s like… That place didn’t make me feel appreciated. With you, I am appreciated. I feel so welcome in Portland now. Plus, I’ve loved working with Chauncey (Billups) as my coach.

Here’s some background: In June, the Celtics attempted to trade Brogdon to the Clippers and Wizards in a three-team deal to acquire Kristaps Porzingis for the Celtics. This was despite Brogdon having a terrific season with the Bruins. However, at the last minute, the deal fell through. This was supposedly because the Clippers were worried about Brogdon’s right arm ιnjury. As a result, Boston reached a separate agreement with three teams for Porzingis, trading Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies.

As per Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe, Brogdon was “not happy” with the trade falling through and the Clippers’ public worries about his health, which caused him and the Celtics to not communicate during the summer. In late September, the Celtics quickly moved to acquire Jrue Holiday from the Portland Trail Blazers for Brogdon and Robert Williams after he became available due to the Milwaukee Bucks’ deal for Damian Lillard.

With Brogdon seeing more action in Portland and Holiday contributing to the Bruins’ best record in the NBA through 48 games, the move was likely beneficial for all parties involved. Holiday averages 5.5 assists and 15.9 points per game.

Although Brogdon and the Celtics may have had a less-than-ideal ending to his C’s stint, he did make a significant impact that 2022–23 season by stepping up to the plate in a losing cause. Similar to last year’s Boston squad, this one is laser-focused on team success rather than individual achievements.
