Lakers fall despite LeBron James becoming the first NBA player to reach 40,000 points

LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers dribbles the ball at Crypto.Com Arena in Los Angeles, California, on March 2, 2024, during the Lakers’ match against the Denver Nuggets.

On Saturday, LeBron James surpassed 40,000 career regular-season points, becoming the first NBA player to do so. In order to reach the milestone, the 39-year-old superstar scored nine against defending champion Denver.

However, the historic endeavor was in vain, as Nikola Jokic’s 35 points helped the Nuggets defeat the Lakers 124-114 in the closing seconds, extending their win streak to six games.

“I am pleased with our performance,” Jokic stated. “We are going about our desired activities.” We have an adequate number of breakdowns. “The current approach we are taking to the game is quite appealing.”

James, who surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the NBA’s all-time scoring record a little over a year ago, is the league’s eldest active player in his 21st season and a four-time NBA Most Valuable Player.

“I am simply delighted for him.” “It was an enormous accomplishment,” said Lakers head coach Darvin Ham. “I wish we had secured the victory to round out the evening.

However, I must say that my cap is off to him. An incredible, incredible success that continues to the present. Furthermore, all members of our program and organization are ecstatic and filled with joy for him.”

With 10:39 remaining in the second quarter, James recorded a historic accomplishment by converting a driving layup from the left corner of the court to give the Lakers a 37-32 lead.

James received a standing ovation from the audience following his basket. James scored a layup with the substitute ball that was removed from the game, but it was the one with which he accomplished the historic basket and helped the Lakers take a 66-58 halftime lead.

James gave the Lakers an 18-12 lead in the first quarter with a fast break layup that marked his first of the game. He then extended that lead to a 23-14 margin with a 3-pointer originating from the left corner 63 seconds later.

James stated, in anticipation of reaching the milestone, that while it will not be among his finest accomplishments, reaching 40,000 points is significant.

“It has never been done by anyone. “I think it’s pretty cool that I’m in this position at this particular juncture in my career,” James continued.

“Do you consider it to be among the finest achievements of my professional life?” No. Does it have any significance? Certainly, indeed. Why might it not?

“Achieving milestones and accomplishing feats throughout my career means something to me.” Undoubtedly so.

“It is evident that there exists a hierarchical structure indicating which one is superior to the others; however, it would be dishonest to assert that it is inconsequential. Undoubtedly, it does.”
