The NBA champion, who has won four titles, has made it very obvious that he intends to remain with Golden State for the remainder of his career.
The Golden State Warriors may have just been dealt a hammer blσw by the top club in the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Boston Celtics, after suffering a defeat of more than fifty points last night at the TD Garden. However, this is just one little hole in a mainly successful run since the turn of the All-Star break.
Still very much in the race to make it to the postseason, with an automatic qualification spot not entirely ruled out either, there has still been a significant amount of attention focused on five-time All-Star Klay Thompson, who is scheduled to become a free agent during the upcoming offseason. However, league insider Mark Medina continues to believe that the guard will continue to be with the Warriors, even if he is required to accept a discounted contract proposal after a season that was terrible by his own high standards.
A 5-2 record since the All-Star break despite the absence of key individuals, the Warriors are rising to the challenge.
With the exception of Friday night’s aberration, when the Celtics destroyed the Warriors and forced head coach Steve Kerr to bench his starting lineup at the half due to exhaustion, Golden State has appeared to be completely rejuvenated since the All-Star break.
With a 32-28, above.500 record, the Warriors are currently ninth in the West. They have completely changed their season, going from being headed towards the lottery to only two and a half games away from earning an automatic post-season qualification. They have gone 5-2 in their last seven games since the All-Star break and 11-4 overall in their last 15 games.
Despite several players losing time due to injuries, including Chris Paul, who returned to action this week after missing 21 games with a fractured hand, and Andrew Wiggins, who is expected to be out indefinitely due to personal matters that are not publicly known, the team has shown improvement in performance.
The uncertainty surrounding Klay Thompson’s future has somewhat overshadowed Golden State’s recent surge in performance.
The 34-year-old guard, who has played his whole career for the Bay Area team, is set to become a free agent this summer. However, after struggling much of the season and eventually being benched by Kerr, it is unclear if he will stay with the team or look for a bigger contract elsewhere.
But despite his considerable production decline, he is theoretically qualified to sign a four-year, $223 million max extension. According to the most recent reports, he is willing to sign a shorter-term contract, probably at a steep discount, to remain with the team he has helped win four NBA titles with.
It’s still unclear, though, if the Warriors would make re-signing the three-point shooter their top priority this summer.
