On Wednesday night, the matchup between the two best teams in the Eastern Conference lost some of its excitement due to Giannis Antetokounmpo’s injury. Despite this, the Bucks’ MVP candidate forward missed a second straight game and a total of five for the season when the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks clashed for the third time this season. Despite not having the Greek Freak in the game, the drama was still there as the Bucks rallied to cut the Celtics’ lead to 21 points in the fourth quarter to a single possession in the final minutes before the Celtics won with clutch play, 122-119.
On a 9-for-19 shooting night, Jayson Tatum poured in 31 points, while Derrick White chipped in 23. Additionally, Boston’s offensive weapons for the game were Payton Pritchard, Kristaps Porzingis, and Jaylen Brown, who scored 57 points apiece. Dame Lillard and Khris Middleton, who just rejoined to the team, scored 32 and 22 points, respectively, for the Bucks. Bobby Portis had a great fourth quarter, finishing with 24 points and 15 rebounds.
Thanks to a scorching first quarter from Tatum and White, the Celtics got out to a fast start tonight, taking advantage of the Bucks’ benching. With 10 and 11 points respectively, the two players led the first quarter scoring, and Boston went on to take an 11-point lead. But the Bucks, with Middleton on the court, came roaring back. In his second game back since mid-February, the 32-year-old forward scored eight points in the first quarter, and the game remained within reach thanks to the Bucks’ balanced offensive effort. At the start of the second quarter, the Celtics held a 33-28 lead.
Regardless of the task, Derrick manages it all.
Twitter post from March 21, 2024, by the Boston CelticsIn their first lineup change of the game, the Celtics brought Xavier Tillman off the bench, a major change in their rotation. Since his trade deadline arrival, Tillman’s playing time has been all over the place, depending on whether the Porzingis or Horford starting combination is out. But coach Joe Mazzulla shifted to using larger lineups in the first half, routinely running multiple bigs and even combining Tillman with Luke Kornet early in the second. Tillman did a good job responding to Milwaukee’s challenges by defensively capturing their ball handlers off of shifts.
Another Celtics bench player who saw action early in the second quarter arrived. This evening, Payton Pritchard showed his Energizer Bunny side by spicing up the Boston offense with some lightning-fast shotmaking right off the bat. With his 13 points (including 10 in the second quarter) and Tatum’s unceasing brilliance, the Celtics started to pull away from Milwaukee in the first half. At one point, Boston held an 18-point lead, and they would go into halftime leading 69-56 after fending off a late surge by the Bucks.

— As tweeted by the Boston Celtics Tomorrow, March 21, 2024As the third quarter started, the momentum started to go toward Milwaukee. Once again reducing the Boston lead to single digits, the Bucks went on a three-point shooting spree in the opening minutes of the quarter. Despite the odds, the Celtics prevailed thanks to a well-rounded offensive effort that got the Bucks back into double digits. With each passing second of the quarter, the Celtics regained the lead. They went into the last frame with a commanding 18-point advantage, 101-83, and the lead grew to 21 points.
Milwaukee cut Boston’s lead in half again in the first few minutes of the fourth. In response to Pritchard’s sixth three-pointer of the game to start the quarter, the Bucks went on a 9-0 run, bringing themselves within twelve points of the Celtics and forcing Mazzulla to call a timeout. After the Bucks went into the halftime break up their lead to 11-0, but White scored a long three to stop the drought. While Bucks coach Doc Rivers was taking a timeout, the Celtics held a 13-point lead with 7 minutes and twenty seconds left in the game.

— As tweeted by the Boston Celtics Tomorrow, March 21, 2024After play restarted, White responded to a three-pointer by Lillard with another three-pointer of his own. Once it happened, the game’s defense started to dictate play, which had previously been driven by goals. After a pair of block shots by White and Pat Connaughton, the teams went over two minutes without scoring until Connaughton’s tip-in. Bobby Portis of Milwaukee went on a personal 5-0 run after a failed Boston challenge, and when Brown missed two free throws, the Celtics found themselves clinging to a six-point advantage with little more than three minutes to go.
The Celtics’ lead was reduced to three points after a Mazzulla timeout, while Portis’ personal run went up to eight points. After he failed to hit a heat check on the next possession, Tatum got a foul near the basket, sank two free throws, and then scored a layup to put Boston up seven again. It was Tatum’s first points of the second half. But with 32.1 seconds left in regulation, Lillard made two free throws and a three-pointer, and Portis scored for the Bucks to get them within two points.
The Bucks needed a defensive stop, so they threw Brown in the game, and he hit both free throws this time. Lillard missed a layup attempt on the following possession after Rivers called a timeout with 20.1 seconds remaining. After the Celtics grabbed the rebound, the Bucks were in a foul trouble and Tatum got the chance to put the game away with a pair of free throws.
The following game, on Friday night at 7 PM EST, will be broadcast by NBC Sports Boston from Detroit, where the Celtics will face the Pistons.
