looking at D’Angelo Russell and the Lakers’ summer optionsIn an attempt to persuade LeBron James to play for the Lakers for at least another season, they will probably make some changes this offseason. Coach Darvin Ham has already been fired, and personnel decisions will need to be made.
For the Lakers, one of the most important players will be D’Angelo Russell. Russell has the chance to become a free agent by exercising his player option. He has a $18.6 million option remaining on his contract, which gives him one year left.
Russell may potentially choose not to sign with the expectation that the Lakers will sign him to a less expensive contract. Russell may potentially choose to opt-in, in which case the Lakers may use him as an expiring contract in exchange for another quality player.
Only if he exercises his option or consents to sign and trade with another team this summer will he be transferred. This season, Russell shot a career-high 41.5 percent from three-point range, which improved his trade value.
The Lakers performed well when D’Angelo Russell was playing well. Russell scored at least 25 points, and LA won 15-3. But in Game 3 of this season’s playoffs, he scored zero points against the Denver Nuggets, displaying his typical drop in production.
As a repeat tax team, the Lakers will also need to maneuver through the luxury tax hurdles with the new CBA. If Russell turns down his offer, they might have some breathing room. They would then be eligible to sign a free agent with the midlevel $12.9 million exception.
If D’Angelo Russell wishes to play for a different team, he can choose to request the same exception during his free agency. The Lakers would have more room to sign a player and avoid paying the first luxury tax if Russell was removed from the books.
Russell handled the ball, so they would probably need to bring in a point guard to take his place. If Gabe Vincent, the guard, maintains healthy for the upcoming season, he might also assume the job.
