The Brazilian team was still at a standstill against the well-organized and compact Costa Rican defense at the half. In an attempt to reinvigorate the offense, coach Dorival Junior was forced to substitute 17-year-old sensation Endrick for Vinicius and Savio for Raphinha in the 70th minute. To boost the attacking force, the 62-year-old coach then substituted attacker Martinelli for Joao Gomes.
Even yet, the Brazilian team was only able to occupy half of the field and failed to generate any goal opportunities. The Costa Rican players heroically blocked most of the scoring possibilities during the encounter, leaving the Selecao powerless with a total of 16 shots, and the match ended in a depressing 0-0 draw.
After Colombia defeated Paraguay 2-1, Brazil, with just one point from the first day, was momentarily placed second in Group D. Brazil will play Paraguay at 8 a.m. on June 29 in the following game; a victory would allow them to reclaim their place and advance to the quarterfinals.
