Nacho, captain of Real Madrid, leaves the club after lifting the Champions League trophy

Real Madrid captain Nacho Fernandez will end his career at the club less than a month after lifting the Champions League trophy in London.

Madrid announced Nacho’s decision on Tuesday, three weeks after the club defeated Borussia Dortmund at Wembley for the club’s 14th European Cup triumph. It was the sixth time that Nacho won the Champions League with Madrid, and the first as captain.

“Real Madrid wants to thank and express its appreciation to Nacho, one of the club’s greatest legends,” the club said.

Nacho, who is with Spain playing in the European Championship, has been at Madrid for more than two decades, since he joined the club’s youth academy in 2001.
