Before Euro 2024 , Toni Kroos announced that he would retire from football after finishing the tournament with the German national team at home. After Germany’s 1-2 defeat to Spain in the quarter-finals, Toni Kroos wrote an emotional farewell letter and apologized to Spain’s Pedri.

Toni Kroos, 34, has confirmed he will hang up his boots after Euro 2024 as his contract with Real Madrid expires. Kroos has been out of international football since 2021 and will miss the 2022 World Cup. But coach Julian Nagelsmann convinced Kroos to return to the Germany squad ahead of Euro 2024 on home soil. Unfortunately, it all ended in heartbreak for Toni Kroos after Germany lost 2-1 to Spain thanks to Mikel Merino’s header late in extra time.

In a social media post , Toni Kroos wrote a farewell letter to his football career: “On September 29, 2023, my phone rang. Caller: Julian Nagelsmann. Request: return to the German national team. The first thought in my head: I’m not รtupid!

My first thought on the morning of July 6, 2024: I’m glad I did it. Despite all the sadness and emptiness since the final whistle against Spain. I’ve always seen more in this team than they’ve shown in recent years.

But I never expected that in such a short time I would have a real chance to win a championship and be among the best again! That’s why I’m so proud of what the team has achieved! And that it could happen again for the whole of Germany.

A special thank you to you (the fans) for making this European Championship in your home country so special. We saw it, experienced it and felt it! On a personal note, I want to thank you for the really special warmth and affection over the past few weeks. It has been very special indeed.

And finally a request: Now that Germany has got their baby back (the German national team is back), don’t let them go again. The path of this team continues. And it would really help if you stick by them even in difficult times! Because I can assure you of one thing: this is a great group of people who are always trying their best to succeed! Germany is number one again!!!”.
