Klay Thompson reflects on his departure from the Warriors: ‘Endings can be necessary at times’

“I’m not really into brҽaking more shooting records… I just want to win at this point.”

Give me this. Give me all of this, Klay Thompson

Klay Thompson wants to get back on track with the Mavericks: “Sometimes breakups are necessary.”

For Klay Thompson, the “biggest day of his life” was when Scottie Pippen joined the Trail Blazers, the team he grew up near in Portland, Oregon. Pippen had left the Chicago Bulls a year before he came to Portland. He was a famous 34-year-old future Hall of Famer who had already won several titles.

Thompson spoke Tuesday for the first time as a member of the Dallas Mavericks. “I’m not saying I’m Scottie,” he said. “But I get a lot of ideas from watching how athletes’ careers went off the rails when they quit or joined a new team.” Some guys do great, and I’m excited to just relax and play here. “There’s still a lot of basketball left in the tank.”

It had been known for months that Thompson would be leaving the Golden State Warriors after 13 seasons, but it wasn’t until the last few weeks that he finally accepted it. The Athletic says that the Warriors didn’t respond to the offers he offered them after the season because they were more interested in other ways to build the team.
