Southgate is 53 years old. He is a former England international and defender who played for Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough and other teams. He represented England from 1995 to 2004, missing seven penalties at the 1996 European Championship.In June 2006, Southgate began his coaching career as a player-manager at Middlesbrough. In the 2008–09 season, Middlesbrough were relegated to the Championship. He was sacked by the club in October 2009. Southgate was the England Under-21 manager until August 2013.
In September 2016, Southgate was appointed as the interim head coach of the England national team by the Football Association. On November 30, he was officially appointed as the head coach of the England national team.To date, he has coached the team in a total of 102 matches. In the past 8 years, he has led the England team to the semi-finals of 4 major tournaments 3 times. In the recently concluded European Cup, he lost 1-2 to Spain in the final.In his farewell letter, Southgate wrote: “As a proud Englishman, it has been the privilege of a lifetime to play for and manage England. It has meant everything to me and I have given it my all. But it is time for a change, it is time for a new chapter. Sunday’s final against Spain in Berlin is my last game as England manager and we have the best fans in the world.
