Facing Celtic in the first summer friendly, coach Pep Guardiola arranged a starting lineup consisting of a number of first team elements combined with young players. Erling Haaland, Jack Grealish, Kalvin Phillips and Simon Orteta are notable names that started from the start.
Celtic dominated and took the lead early with Nicolas Kuhn’s opening goal in the 13th minute. Man City leveled the gap 20 minutes later, with Erling Haaland giving up the ball for Oscar Bobb to finish past Kasper Schmeichel.
The match took place with an open position and Celtic was the team that took better chances. Kuhn and Furuhashi Kyogo took turns filling in their names on the electronic board for the remainder of the first half, increasing the score to 3-1.
After the break, Pep made 5 personnel changes at once. One of the early adjustments worked, when Maximo Perrone scored to shorten the gap for “Cityzens”.
In the 57th minute, Bobb responded to Haaland with an accurate cross from the left wing, creating conditions for the Norwegian striker to powerfully head in to tie the game 3-3.
Not long after the above goal, Pep decided to withdraw both Haaland and Grealish from the field. Celtic confidently attacked and were rewarded with Luis Palma’s decisive goal, sealing an unexpected victory over Man City.
