Man Utd’s efforts, including Garnacho’s solo goal and Onana’s performance, were in vain as they lost to Man City in a decisive penalty shootout in the Community Shield, missing out on victory

Manchester United were expected to go on to beat Manchester City in the Community Shield but they failed to do so.

Erik ten Hag’s side went into the Community Shield against their crosstown rivals with a disappointing pre-season tour and a squad ravaged by injuries. It was certainly not a good preparation.

In defense, Leny Yoro, who made an impressive debut in the United States, was unable to participate, and Luke Shaw was not physically ready.

Coach Ten Hag therefore arranged for Harry Maguire to partner Jonny Evans in the center of the defense, pushing Lisandro Martinez to play left-back.

In attack, because Rasmus Hojlund is still recovering from an injury and new signing Joshua Zirkzee is not ready, the Dutch coach decided to play without a striker, but let Mason Mount play as a “false 9” with support from Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo.

Entering the match, Manchester United appeared to be inferior to their “neighbors” in terms of possession time, but were quite equal in terms of chances and shots. Therefore, the 1-1 draw after 90 minutes of play reflected fairness.

In the end, the two teams had to decide the winner on penalties. After 8 rounds, the home team at Old Trafford was only successful 6 times, and had to accept defeat with a final penalty score of 6-7.
