Manchester United have confirmed the £60 million double signing of Bayern Munich’s defensive duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.
These two will become the club’s third and fourth additions of the summer transfer window, bringing Erik ten Hag’s spending to around £149 million after securing Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee earlier.
De Ligt will don the No. 4 jersey, previously worn by players like Steve Bruce, David May, and Phil Jones. Mazraoui has chosen the No. 3 jersey, which has been worn by the likes of Denis Irwin, Phil Neville, and Patrice Evra.
Both transfers are pending the finalization of their registrations. De Ligt, 25, joins in a £38.5 million (€45 million) deal, with potential add-ons of up to £4.27 million (€5 million). The Dutch center-back has signed a five-year contract, keeping him at the club until 2029, with an option for a further year.
Right-back Mazraoui, 26, arrives for a fee of £12.8 million (€15 million) with possible add-ons of £4.27 million (€5 million). He has agreed to a deal that will keep him at the club until June 2028, with an option to extend for an additional year.
United ramped up their pursuit of a new center-back and full-backs on both sides of the defense early in the transfer window, following a season plagued by injuries to key defenders.
De Ligt and Mazraoui are now set to reunite with their former coach, Ten Hag, having both worked under the Dutch manager during their time at Ajax.
The duo flew in from Munich on Monday morning for medical examinations and were later spotted dining at the upscale Sexy Fish restaurant in Deansgate that evening.
De Ligt, who will wear the No. 4 shirt, expressed his excitement about the move, saying, “As soon as I heard Manchester United were interested, I was thrilled at the prospect of taking on a new challenge at such a historic club.”
“In the discussions that followed, I was impressed by the vision laid out by the football leadership and the role they envisioned for me.”
The Dutch international added, “Erik ten Hag was instrumental in shaping the early part of my career, so he knows how to bring out the best in me, and I’m eager to work with him again.”
“I understand what it takes to succeed at the highest level, and I’m determined to continue that success at this special club.”
Man United’s sporting director, Dan Ashworth, commented, “Matthijs is an exceptional defender and a proven winner who will bring quality, experience, and leadership to our group of senior players. He has already achieved significant success in his career, and we believe his best years are yet to come; we want to help him reach that potential at Manchester United.”
De Ligt and Mazraoui are both products of Ajax’s renowned academy, with De Ligt departing the club in 2019 to join Juventus. He went on to win the Serie A title in 2020 before moving to Bayern in 2022, where he secured the Bundesliga title in 2023.
