Goals from Valverde and Mbappe helped Real Madrid beat Atalanta 2-0 in the European Super Cup in Warsaw (Poland) in the early morning of August 15.
Last season, Real Madrid won the UEFA Champions League and Atalanta won the UEFA Europa League. The two teams faced each other in Warsaw, Poland, in the European Super Cup in search of a title ahead of the new season.
All eyes were on Mbappe, as the French star made his first start for the “White Vultures”. Real Madrid kept pressing, but they were met by a tight Atalanta defense.
In the first 30 minutes, Real Madrid had almost no significant chances as Atalanta’s defense played very tightly. Mbappe had very few opportunities to touch the ball and coordinate with his teammates.
With Mbappe locked down, Vinicius played impressively. In the 34th minute, Vinicius broke through the middle and passed to Bellingham, who shot over the bar. At the end of the first half, Vinicius passed the ball to Rodrigo, but the striker shot wide.
In the second half, Real Madrid tried to press the field and they showed their effectiveness in the 59th minute. Vinicius dribbled the ball down the left wing, crossed the ball close to the sideline and then crossed for Valverde to tap the ball into the empty net, opening the score 1-0 for Real Madrid.
While in high spirits, in the 68th minute, Real Madrid launched a quick aԵԵack and Jude Bellingham made a pass just in time for Kylian Mbappe to finish into the top corner, raising the score to 2-0 for the reigning Champions League champions.
In the remaining time of the match, despite their best efforts, Atalanta could not score a consolation goal. Real Madrid maintained their 2-0 victory and won the 2024 European Super Cup.
Kylian Mbappe left the field in the 83rd minute and he had an impressive debut for Real Madrid. Coach Ancelotti’s army will start La Liga with a trip to Mallorca on August 19.
After the match, Bellingham was voted man of the match even though he did not score. This is the 6th time Real Madrid has won the European Super Cup, surpassing the achievements of Barcelona and AC Milan.
