Wayne Rooney scored from a stunning free kick to gift Red Devils fans as he returned to play for Man United

It was just a charity match, between Man United legends and Celtic on Saturday, but it was enough to get the fans at Old Trafford excited.

Wayne Rooney gave the Red Devils the lead, but the visitors equalised late through Gary Hooper, sending the match to a penalty shootout.

Here are five talking points from the clash at Old Trafford.

1. Carrick is still classy

Michael Carrick isn’t known for his runs into the box, but like any great central midfielder, he’s perfectly capable of doing so.

In the 20th minute of the match, the captain of the legendary Man United team made a great move when he dribbled through the Celtic defense. He created enough space to cross the ball in, but was blocked and gave Man United a corner. Anyway, this situation caused the whole Old Trafford stadium to applaud.

2. Berbatov vs Mulgrew

It may have been a friendly, but the big names came out and gave it their all. Charlie Mulgrew – who still plays for Doncaster City – was closely marking Dimitar Berbatov and was fouled early in the opening minutes.

The former Celtic defender brought down the Bulgarian star again late in the first half. Berbatov was not pleased, but could smile afterwards, as the free-kick from which Wayne Rooney scored the opening goal of the match.

3. Rooney’s free kick masterpiece

When asked who they were looking forward to in this match, most Man United fans would answer Wayne Rooney . And the Old Trafford legend did not disappoint.
