Liverpool goalkeeper criticizes new Champions League format

Ahead of the Champions League opener, Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker shared his thoughts on the new format of Europe’s most exciting club tournament.

Accordingly, the new season’s C1 Cup will start with a “league phase”, with clubs facing 8 different teams (2 teams from each seeded group), 2 more matches than the usual group stage (6 matches, 3 first legs, 3 second legs). This means clubs will have to play more matches and face more different teams.

According to Alisson Becker, although the new format may bring joy to fans who want to watch more matches, it will affect the players. The Liverpool goalkeeper said: “For the players, it’s great to play against the best players in Europe. It’s always a great idea to add more matches to the schedule, but no one asks the players how they feel about having more matches.

So maybe our opinion is not important, but everyone knows what we think. We are all tired of it. We want a meeting, we want to sit down and talk, we want the media.

We are not 𝔰tupid and we understand the benefits of this format. We understand that we all want more games, but it would be reasonable for those who create this schedule to sit down and listen to everyone, including the players.”

Liverpool will face AC Milan in the first round of the Champions League. The Reds’ remaining opponents in the “league phase” are Real Madrid, Leipzig, Leverkusen, Lille, PSV, Bologna and Girona.
