Trent Alexander-Arnold is ready to take criticism from new coach Arne Slot to improve and become the most feared defender in Europe.
“I told Slot that I wanted to be the defender that no one wanted to play against in Europe,” Alexander-Arnold said.
To do that, the 25-year-old defender wants coach Arne Slot to be strict with him, scolding and criticizing him every time he is passed by an opponent, both in team meetings and in private conversations. “We review every game and every situation he wants me to improve. Even after the win over Milan, we have about 20 videos where he tells me what I need to do better, and praises me for the things I do right,” Alexander-Arnold said.
Alexander-Arnold worked with Jurgen Klopp, who led Liverpool from 2015 to 2024, winning eight titles, including the Premier League, FA Cup, Community Shield, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and two League Cups.
Slot was chosen as Klopp’s successor after his departure in the summer of 2024. After five rounds in the Premier League, he and Liverpool won 12 points, just one point behind leaders Man City. “It’s great to have a coach who is willing to help, guide and show me how to become a better player,” Alexander-Arnold added. “I’m someone who wants to learn, wants to be the best, and someone who always strives to be the best.”
Alexander-Arnold joined Liverpool’s academy in 2004, and was promoted to the first team in 2016. The England defender made his debut in a 2-1 win over Tottenham in the fourth round of the League Cup on 25 October 2016. In total, he has 19 goals and 83 assists in 316 appearances in all competitions.
Alexander-Arnold is a strong passer of the ball and an attacking midfielder, but has been criticised for his lack of concentration in defence, leaving his position and allowing opposition strikers to get past him. He sees this as a harsh view and one that is unlikely to change after just one good performance.
