Wojtek Czyz visited Jürgen Klopp’s home
The strange bond between Jurgen Klopp and the Paralympian from New Zealand while he supports the opposition
When Wojtek Czyz of New Zealand plays para-badminton against Daniel Bethell of Britain at the Paralympics in Paris, former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will be there to support him.
Jurgen Klopp, the former manager of Liverpool, is presently in Paris supporting his good friend Wojtek Czyz during his Paralympic competition.
Czyz and Klopp have been friends for over 20 years. Klopp, who left his position as manager of Liverpool at the end of the previous season, will be cheering Czyz on as he competes in the men’s Para-badminton event at La Chappelle Arena against Daniel Bethell of Britain.
Czyz, who previously won four gold medals for Germany at the Paralympic Games in Athletics, will be competing for his adopted country of New Zealand in the sport. In his last game for his local team VfR Grunstadt, the 44-year-old football player—who had just inked his first professional contract with Fortuna Koln—suffered a career-ending injury.
Czyz was pushing for a loose ball when he collided with the other goalkeeper, his leg badly enough to require an amputation. During his recuperation, Czyz later ran into Klopp at a charity football game, and they subsequently became friends.
