Former Manchester United, Real Madrid, and France star Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from football.
At 31, Varane has struggled with fitness in recent years and suffered a serious knee injury just 20 minutes into his debut for Como last month.
Following this setback, he was left out of Como’s Serie A squad as he is expected to be sidelined for an extended period.
Consequently, Le Parisien had previously reported that the 31-year-old was contemplating an unexpected retirement.
Now, Varane has officially ended his illustrious career, revealing his decision through a post on his Instagram account on Wednesday morning.
Varane is expected to be out for an extended period and has been omitted from Como’s Serie A squad.
Alongside a series of photos from his career, Varane stated in a message: “They say all good things must come to an end.
“In my career, I have taken on many challenges, rising to occasion after occasion, most of which were supposed to be impossible. I have experienced incredible emotions, special moments, and memories that will last a lifetime. Reflecting on these moments, I feel immense pride and fulfillment as I announce my retirement from the game we all love.
“I hold myself to the highest standards; I want to go out strong rather than just holding on to the game. It takes a great deal of courage to listen to your heart and instincts. Desire and needs are two different things. I have fallen and risen a thousand times, and this time, it’s the moment to stop and hang up my boots after winning a trophy in my final game at Wembley.
“I have loved fighting for myself, my clubs, my country, my teammates, and the supporters of every team I’ve played for—from Lens to Madrid to Manchester, and representing our national team. I have defended every badge with everything I have, and I have cherished every minute of this journey. Playing at the highest level is an exhilarating experience. It tests every aspect of your body and mind. The emotions we experience are unparalleled. As athletes, we are never satisfied and never fully accept success. It’s in our nature and what drives us.”
