Real Madrid draw with Atletico over ‘bitter injury time’

The Madrid derby ended in a 1-1 draw, but this will be a memorable match because it was delayed for quite a while after Atletico fans threw lighters at Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Shortly after Eder Militao put Real Madrid ahead in the second half, Courtois made a provocative gesture in celebration to the home fans. Then, a wave of fierce protests erupted when Atletico fans started throwing many strange objects at the Belgian goalkeeper.

The referee had to stop the match and the players quickly moved to the dugout. Coach Diego Simeone even had to stand up and make a gesture hoping his fans would stay calm.

After about 15 minutes, the players of both teams returned to the field to continue the remaining 21 minutes. At this point, Atletico accelerated to find an equalizer. Real’s defense played solidly with Courtois making an excellent save to deny Lino’s chance. But in the end, Los Blancos could not stand firm in the final minutes of stoppage time.

In the 90+5 minute, Angel Correa scored the equalizer to 1-1 to keep 1 point for the home team at the Metropolitano. The referee initially thought Correa was offside but VAR determined the goal was valid.
