The Madrid derby between Atletico and Real at the Estadio Metropolitano ended in a 1-1 draw, but it was the off-field action that really caught the eye. Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone and captain Koke have criticised the behaviour of former Atletico and now Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois after he was accused of provoking the home fans.
The incident occurred after Real Madrid opened the scoring in the 60th minute of the match. According to witnesses, Courtois turned towards the Atletico fans and made a provocative celebration. The reaction from Atletico fans was extremely violent, with several objects being thrown onto the pitch, including lighters and plastic bags, aimed at the Belgian goalkeeper.
After Real Madrid opened the scoring in the 64th minute, Thibaut Courtois had a provocative celebration with Atletico Madrid fans at the Metropolitano stadium.
La Liga’s organizing committee even intended to postpone the match to another day, if the security situation was not guaranteed. After nearly 20 minutes of interruption, the atmosphere in the stands of the Metropolitano stadium calmed down. The organizing committee decided to let the players of both teams go out and complete the rest of the match.
Real Madrid led until the 90+5 minute but was still held to a 1-1 draw by Atletico Madrid. The two Madrid clubs held each other in 2nd and 3rd place in the La Liga rankings.
