Midfielder Bruno Fernandes has hinted that he would rather play for Portugal than Manchester United, while admitting that the current situation at Old Trafford is “not positive”.
The 30-year-old star said that MU’s situation is not good at the moment, when the team is only ranked 14th in the Premier League table with 8 points after 7 matches. In the Europa League, the Red Devils also only won 2 points after 2 matches.
Things got worse last week when Fernandes was sent off against Porto . Amid the turmoil at Old Trafford, Fernandes has turned to playing for Portugal as a way to escape the pressure.
“It’s not a positive moment. We’re not winning, and the atmosphere in the national team is completely different. I feel very comfortable, the motivation is very good. I’m at home, speaking my mother tongue and the food is better. I’ve been performing well in the national team,” he said.
Fernandes also added: “It’s where I feel comfortable and can enjoy my football at the highest level, thanks to the dynamics we have and the quality of teammates I have next to me.”
However, Fernandes stressed that he is determined to improve his form when he returns to Manchester: “It’s important to improve as soon as possible when I come back. I have to find the goals because I’m a midfielder who scores a lot of goals, and over the years I’ve always maintained a high level of form in terms of goals.
I need to meet those expectations and my own standards. What I have done so far is not what I want for this season, because I have not scored a goal for the club.”
MU will face Brentford in round 8 of the Premier League on October 19.
