Striker Cristiano Ronaldo’s five-match scoring streak ended as Portugal drew 0-0 with Scotland in the fourth round of Group A1 of the 2024 UEFA Nations League.
At the end of the match, Portugal was awarded a corner kick and the extra time had run out, so Belgian referee Lawrence Visser blew the final whistle.
Ronaldo was furious that his team was not awarded a corner kick, repeatedly waving his arms and clapping, shouting or shaking his head, then clenching his fists and pointing his thumbs to the ground to indicate the referee was bad. His last chance to score in his 200th start for the national team was thus gone.
In October 2003, Ronaldo started his first match for Portugal, and after 21 years he reached the milestone of 200 matches.
However, this was the first time the 39-year-old superstar played in Scotland, and he created a fever with the audience there. There were always hundreds of people surrounding Ronaldo, and the striker also spent time interacting with them. But witnessing Ronaldo’s reaction at the end of the match, the audience at Hampden Park whistled and booed him.
Ronaldo had four shots in the match, only one of which was saved by 42-year-old goalkeeper Craig Gordon.
The Portuguese captain attracted attention in the 31st minute with an impromptu overhead kick that went just wide of the post. He also created a chance for Francisco Conceicao to shoot over the bar in the second half.
Not only Ronaldo, the entire Portuguese team also performed poorly when they wasted 14 chances.
Midfielder Bruno Fernandes missed a good opportunity near the end of the match with a close-range tap-in, which was countered by Gordon and caught a few steps later. Roberto Martinez’s army also had their three-match winning streak in the Nations League broken, losing their place in the next round two matches early.
Portugal remain top of Group A1, with 10 points, six points ahead of third-placed Poland, with two games remaining. Ronaldo and his teammates are considered to have one foot in the Nations League quarter-finals, taking place in March 2025.
