Sandy remembered that ‘other people turned it down’ while Keanu passed initially but changed his mind as the 80-year-old “mad genius” was the cinematographer on Die Hard: That he shot that, I thought, f*** yeah.

Bullock, who obtained a bus driver’s license despite never having ever driven the bus, commended Reeves for respecting her modesty during a pivotal, climax sequence in which they both safely leave the bomb-rigged vehicle.

For me, Keanu’s work was most crucial since it involved positioning his hands such that the skirt doesn’t fly over my head. Apart from performing the stunt to ensure my safety, he had to maintain my integrity by hiding items that shouldn’t be visible on a 17-foot screen. That’s what I recall about that day.

Saying “We had some crazy dialogue and it was just awesome,” the Beirut-born Canadian described their late, great co-star Dennis Hopper – who portrayed the villain Howard Payne – “a little nuts’ but a total pro.”

‘How normal’ the two-time Oscar nominee, who died in 2010 at age 74, was behind the scenes: ‘He was extremely polite to me. Sandy was startled by this. He was passionate about his work. He delighted in discussing art, acquiring pieces, local artists’ work.

Jan remembered how awful one of the largest stunts went on the first take when the bus leaps in the air and makes a safe landing on a freeway after a 50-foot gap.

Real action is what this is. De Bont mentioned that there is no CGI.

I was attempting to treat the stuntman and the driver really politely. “It’s really important that you get a good speed; otherwise you won’t make it,” I advised. “Oh, definitely yes, I can do it,” he said. The first time we shot it…

‘He started slowing down at the last time on the ramp and sadly missed the other side, landing on seven cameras exactly below all set to record it coming over. That bus fell apart. I said, “Don’t tell the studio, don’t tell the studio!”‘

‘I knew we had something really early on, and from the moment I saw Keanu and Sandra working as a team and executing most of the stunts together, which was so amazing,’ the Dutch director said about the chemistry of his protagonists.

“The first time we filmed it,” De Bont added, “the stunt driver got scared at the last moment on the ramp and started slowing down and sadly, he didn’t make it to the other side and landed on seven cameras right below all placed to film it coming over.” That bus collapsed. I said, “Don’t tell the studio, don’t tell the studio!”‘

Three years later, Bullock returned to Jan’s sequel Speed 2: Cruise Control co-starring Jason Patric, which brought in $164.5M at the worldwide box office despite an abysmal 4% critic rating (out of 76 reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Bullet Train actress laughed when the prospect of a third movie surfaced: “The geriatric version. It is not quick!

‘All of this happened due of the insane man wearing a greenish jacket across there. Today he is so tender and loving; I feel as though this is not the man I know. Sandy said, “But he’s the man who put the energy and the idea together, knew what the audience wanted and demanded it from everyone and everyone stepped up to play it.”

What then would that film be to make Jan’s brain and intelligence happy? Everybody would have to give a lot of effort. I’m not sure if we live in a sector today that is ready to accept it and have the guts to act accordingly. Perhaps I might be mistaken. He felt like he failed if he cannot produce [what is in his brain] for the public. What we could do that would be sufficient for the audience is unknown.

The Dutch filmmaker remarked of his leads’ chemistry: ‘I knew we had something very early on, and at the moment I saw Keanu and Sandra working as a team and doing most of the stunts themselves, which was so great’

Reiterating their 1998 roles of witch twins Sally and Gillian Owens for Practical Magic 2, which will be a big-screen adaptation of Alice Hoffman’s 2021 follow-up book The Book of Magic, Miss Congeniality graduate Nicole Kidman will return next year.
