Although he announced his plans to retire over the summer, Cristiano Ronaldo appears to have taken a subtle dig at his former club, Juventus, during a conversation with Wojciech Szczesny, who has recently transferred to Barcelona.
In a video that has gone viral on the internet, Ronaldo was heard telling Szczesny, “You needed to retire to get to a big club.”
Ronaldo inquired if Szczesny was pleased with his recent transfer to Barcelona while taking a moment to pose for pictures with his children. He then humorously remarked that his former teammate would need to retire in order to join “a big club.”
In August, Szczesny announced his intention to retire from professional football, resulting in a mutual termination of his contract with Juventus.
Despite having spent over eight years with the Bianconeri, his position as a starter was threatened by Michele Di Gregorio’s summer signing from Monza.
Following this, Szczesny declared his retirement and signed with Barcelona, where he will serve until the end of the current season, stepping in for club captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who is sidelined with a long-term injury. This situation led to Ronaldo’s subtle jab at Juventus.
