The Philadelphia 76ers (1-4) hosted the Memphis Grizzlies (4-3), aiming to steer their season back on track after a rough start. Despite keeping the game close early on with hot shooting, the Sixers ultimately fell apart and suffered a 124-107 loss. Joel Embiid and Paul George were sidelined but provided updates on their recoveries: Embiid is progressing without a set return date, while George is focusing on regaining full conditioning before rejoining the lineup.
The Grizzlies were also missing key players, including guards Desmond Bane, Marcus Smart, and Luke Kennard, as well as young wings GG Jackson II and Vince Williams Jr., yet still benefited from the presence of All-Stars Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr.
While Tyrese Maxey has been finding his rhythm as Philadelphia’s main offensive option, Morant continued to showcase his playmaking and explosive athleticism, effectively running Memphis’s offense.
Maxey, who struggled with scoring efficiency early in the season, has begun to stabilize his game, although Morant’s skill as a one-man offensive force proved decisive.
In their head-to-head battle, both guards delivered impressive performances, but Morant’s stronger support cast made the difference.
Maxey was initially defended by rookie Jaylen Wells, with Scotty Pippen Jr. also taking on the assignment.
He hit a few off-the-dribble shots, tricking Wells by feinting a drive to the paint out of the pick-and-roll before stopping for a three. Maxey’s pick-and-roll play remains one of the few consistent sources of offense for the Sixers, alongside occasional fast breaks.
