Cody Gakpo, hands out meals to children in Togo, which is his father’s country of origin

As he takes a break before the season, Liverpool player Cody Gakpo feeds kids in Togo, his father’s native country. The forward is “looking to set up a charity project” in the African nation.

When Liverpool player Cody Gakpo traveled to his father’s native Togo, he was captured on camera distributing food to kids.

Less than a week after playing against the Netherlands in the Nations League, the 24-year-old is seen delivering bowlfuls of food to a bunch of eager children in a video that was uploaded to TikTok.

Gakpo’s team lost to Italy 2-3 in the third-place play-off match, securing fourth place in the competition.

ESPN reports that Gakpo’s desire to give back to Togo is the driving force behind his choice of post-season destination. The footballer is reportedly looking into the idea of establishing a philanthropic project in Togo.

The former PSV player was adamant about playing for the Dutch national team, for whom he has played since U18 level, when Togo’s football association approached him four years ago about switching international allegiances. Gakpo has strong ties to his Togolese heritage and his family, who are still based in the west African country.

Gakpo has been an important member of the Oranje since 2022, and his three goals in the group stages of the World Cup in Qatar in December virtually guaranteed him a move to the Premier League.

Before returning to Liverpool for preseason training and the unofficial start of the Reds’ 2023–24 season, Gakpo has two weeks remaining in his off-season.

After joining the Merseyside team in January 2023, the player has not yet enjoyed a preseason under boss Jurgen Klopp. He will be eager to improve on his impressive first half for the fifth-place squad.

Gakpo has scored seven goals and provided three assists in his 21 games under Klopp.

Liverpool ended the season on a high note to guarantee European play the next year, despite a dismal performance for significant portions of the season.

For the first time since 2016, when they were defeated by competition heavyweights Sevilla in the tournament final, the team will play in the Europa League.
