Bruno Fernandes explains why Alejandro Garnacho chose not to celebrate his stunning goal in Manchester United’s 3-0 victory over Leicester – with the Red Devils captain praising the Argentine as a ‘special player’

Alejandro Garnacho feels that some Manchester United supporters have lost confidence in him, which led him to skip celebrating his recent goal, as revealed by captain Bruno Fernandes.

Before the midweek Europa League match against PAOK, Garnacho had a tense interaction with a fan who criticized him for not passing to teammates often enough. The season has been a rollercoaster for Garnacho, as he has missed some key opportunities in the Premier League and lost his starting spot to Marcus Rashford.

When asked about Garnacho’s muted reaction, Fernandes noted that the young player needs to rebuild his confidence. “Garnacho scored an amazing goal but didn’t celebrate as much because he feels he’s lost some fans’ trust,” Fernandes shared with the BBC.

‘I told him people will always moan but lots of people like you and enjoy what you do.

‘I told him to celebrate, it was something special. He is a special player and we have difference makers. They are the ones who win us games.

‘We want them to score every game but that isn’t going to happen.’

Fernandes produced a man-of-the-match display in what is the final game in charge for interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Fernandes spoke recently of how he called Ten Hag up to apologise for not being at his best.

His goal on Sunday made it four in four under Van Nistelrooy and he is heating up at just the right time with Ruben Amorim walking through the door on Monday.

‘It was a long time that I wasn’t scoring and now goals are coming in the last few games,’ Fernandes said, joking later that Fantasy Football managers will rue the fact his second goal was eventually given as a Viktor Kristiansen own goal.

‘Another clean sheet was important for us to bring back the fortress we had here. We have to keep doing that and we have to improve.’
