Manchester United concluded their brief stint under the management of Ruud van Nistelrooy in impressive fashion, defeating Leicester City 3-0. Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho, alongside a Viktor Kristiansen own goal, found the net, showing that United is steadily regaining its confidence.
With Ruben Amorim set to take over as head coach on Monday, many players are fighting for their places, and this match provided an excellent opportunity for several to make their case.
Mail Sport’s Nathan Salt was at Old Trafford to provide player ratings:
Andre Onana (6): Made a vital save at 1-0, denying Wilfried Ndidi one-on-one after the midfielder snuck behind the United defense. At times, Onana’s attempts to play long balls were too ambitious, leading to lost possession.
Noussair Mazraoui (7): Contributed the pre-assist for the second goal, which Fernandes thought was his second. He impressed down the left, though a decision is needed on whether he’s better suited to left-back or right-back. His frequent positional switches have hindered chemistry on the field.
Lisandro Martinez (7): Delivered another solid performance, even after being moved to left-back when Jonny Evans came on. United struggled in his absence last season, so keeping him fit is crucial for Amorim.
Matthijs de Ligt (6.5): Had a relatively straightforward match, returning to the lineup after being rested against PAOK. His passing accuracy was impressive at over 90%, a key asset for United when building play.
Casemiro (6): A beneficiary of the managerial change, Casemiro has looked rejuvenated under Van Nistelrooy, playing with more freedom and joy compared to the final weeks of Erik ten Hag’s tenure.
Manuel Ugarte (6.5): Not expected to produce spectacular moments every week, but Ugarte is steadily settling in. His connection with new manager Amorim, given their past at Sporting, could be key for his growth.
Marcus Rashford (5): Had a quiet performance after being preferred to Garnacho on the left wing. His decision-making was puzzling, and large parts of the game seemed to pass him by. He struggled with dribbles and accurate crosses before being substituted early.
Bruno Fernandes (8.5): A standout performer on his 250th appearance for United, Fernandes was all smiles both before and after the match. He scored a stunning goal, played a part in the second via a deflection off Kristiansen, and added an assist for Garnacho’s third goal. Fernandes has now netted four goals in four games under Van Nistelrooy’s management.
