The French national team advanced to the UEFA Nations League quarterfinals after beating Italy 3-1 in Milan, mirroring the Italians’ September 3-1 triumph in Paris.

Didier Deschamps’ team needed the third goal to match the Italians and improve their goal difference and head-to-head record. Adrien Rabiot’s second goal and Guglielmo Vicario’s own goal did it.

France finished first without Eduardo Camavinga, who traveled to Milan with his teammates but watched from the sidelines. AS Roma’s Manu Kané replaced Camavinga after he collected his second yellow card of the Nations League against Israel on Thursday.

After receiving a yellow card against Israel during the October international break, he was ruled out for this encounter. The next international break in March 2025 will bring him back for Deschamps’ quarterfinal.

This play-off round will be drawn on Friday, November 22nd, and France will play one of the other A League teams that qualified, including Spain, Germany, and Italy. Croatia, Poland, and Scotland might qualify from Group 1, the Netherlands or Hungary from Group 3, and Denmark or Serbia from Group 4.

After leaving Ferland Mendy and Kylian Mbappé out for this international window, Deschamps will need to decide whether to call on them. Aurélien Tchouameni will have recovered from his injury and might return to the squad.
