How Cody Gakpo lives in Liverpool, what inspires him, and his nicknames: a day with him
In our new “A Day With…” film series, Cody Gakpo talks about his life on Merseyside, her family history, football heroes, and a lot more.
We recently spent a day with the Liverpool forward to learn more about how he has been adjusting to his new home since he joined the club in January.
Gakpo talks about his habits as host Rubi Deschamps rides with him to training. We also get to know him better by following him around the AXA Training Centre and learning the nickname one of his teammates has given him.
The Dutchman then goes to the Baltic Triangle in the city and talks about how Reds fans have affected him and how he wants to win trophies here.
“No matter where you play, you always hear them and feel their support, and it’s always good,” the No. 18 person says. “That’s why you’re going to take the next step and for them too.” It’s all one.”
He also talks about how much he loves his new home: “Yeah, I was on vacation back home in the Netherlands, and at one point I started missing being here because I really like it here.”
“I’ve never won a prize at Liverpool, but I can imagine it must be a little different at other clubs where I play.”
Gakpo talks about how much he loved football as a child and how his father helped him take the first steps toward a professional job in Eindhoven.
“Where I’m from, everyone supports PSV, so we had Afellay on the team. He played for PSV and then for Barcelona, so everyone in the city wanted to be him,” he says.
“Then there were Messi, Ronaldo, and all those other big names.” All of them were great examples.
“When I first started football, my dad put in a lot of work with me.” He used to look up to Maradona and Pele, so he always showed me videos of them. That’s how I met them too; they’re all very smart.
